FIVE
SAGE
Juliette held tight to me as I took my bike to the street. The powerful engine roared as we sped beneath the ocean of endless stars. She kept those arms cinched tight around my waist, and I could feel the thunder of her heart like she was racing the road, a destination set out ahead of us that we were waiting to discover.
I knew sheâd wanted to resist my offer, her hesitations flying all around her, but there was something there that compelled her, too.
So sheâd taken a seat on a stool back at the bar while Iâd finished the things I needed to handle at the club before I could skip out, then I was hightailing it out of there the second I could get free.
Didnât know what had taken me over, insisting she come home with me, but there was something that wouldnât allow me to just let her walk out.
Gut told me I had to explore it.
Or maybe Iâd just needed to know she was safe.
Now, I could feel anxious nerves skittering through her limbs and seeping into my body. Fucked up thing was how badly I wanted to take it on for her. Hold whatever bullshit this girl had gotten herself into because there was no doubt in my mind it was ugly.
I made the couple turns into my neighborhood, the engine growling low as I slowed and pulled into the drive of the one-story house.
I killed the engine, and the two of us just sat there for a beat, letting the silence reign while need and questions and confusion gusted with the breeze that blew through the towering trees.
I set my hand over both of hers that were still locked around my waist. âLetâs get you inside.â
She nodded against my back, and I helped her off, ensuring she didnât burn herself as she went. Couldnât do anything but stare at her where she stood there fidgeting next to my bike with moonlight pouring over her.
Her milky skin was lit in a silvery hue. Green eyes edged in tension and her body written in need.
âWhat am I doing here, Sage?â
I pushed from my bike, coming to tower over the girl, my hand coming out to splay over one side of her face. âYou tell me.â
She blinked, her throat full of a raspy sigh. âI think thatâs the problemâI have no idea what Iâm doing.â
âYou came looking for somethinâ, gorgeous. I figured weâd discover exactly what that is.â
âYou already gave me what I was looking for.â It was a fragile strand of words.
âBullshit.â It was a growl. âYou came looking for more.â
Her delicate throat bobbed heavily when she swallowed. âNo. I wasnât looking for more. But then I found you and you changed everything I thought I knew. And if I stay any longer with you, Iâm afraid itâs going to hurt when I walk away.â
I edged closer, taking both sides of her face in my hands, tilting her up so I could find the truth in her gaze.
